Is Your Business Tearing You in Two Different Directions?

Most of us have had the experience of needing to be two places at one time.  Sometimes running a business, especially when you’re a solopreneur, can feel just like that.  You have the responsibility of running the entire business…being the face up front and handling the day to day operations in the background.

Unfortunately, a lot of business owners choose to focus more on the front scene, trying to attract potential customers/clients and trying to offer whatever possible to close the deal or sell the product.  The focus is so much on the front that after we get the client, we aren’t prepared to keep and maintain the business relationship because we are not prepared in the back ground. We aren’t prepared to handle the requests, deliver the product or service, or develop a consistent business relationship.  Like any other relationship, getting a client or customer is one thing.  Keeping them is another.

Whether you are working solo or working with a team, there has to be a healthy balance of working your business from both sides.  Of course, in the front you do have to market, let people know who you are and what you’re about in order to attract them.  Some of the background work may be more challenging, but important nonetheless.

For example, you need to make sure that you have written operating procedures in place to make sure that you’re running the business consistently. This helps you but also helps if you take on team members.  Everyone will be operating on the same accord.

Keeping track of numbers and checking analytics and results of the marketing efforts is important as well.  You need to see where your efforts are paying off and where you can place resources elsewhere.  You won’t know if you aren’t paying attention. Finding a system or method to track your numbers, weekly, is a big help.

Organizing your business and yourself is another key area that goes overlooked.  Good project management tools can help you plan, set target dates, and monitor efforts made by yourself and your team. If you organize and schedule your time to handle various tasks, you can spend more time in the front promoting and preparing for incoming traffic.

These are just a few of the many things that take place behind the scenes of you business.  Setting plans and detailing how you will get things done in great; however, it’s all meaningless if you don’t implement your plan.  At times you may realize that you actually do need help getting it all done.  Just make sure it gets done.  If you are running smoothly and consistently in the background, the front line will shine and do what it’s supposed to do.
