Project Management for the Solopreneur

There is a lot of talk about Project Management Software and how helpful it is for teams. Good News! It’s excellent for Solopreneurs as well. For some of us we’re still the everything man/woman in our business. That being said, we have to be certain that we are organized to increase our productivity.  Project Management software is a great tool that can keep us on track.

1. It allows you to set clear goals. A large part of our lack of productivity has to do with not knowing what to do next…where to focus our energy.  Having clear goals listed allows you to build tasks because now you see where you’re going.  In moments that you stray off the path, refer back to your goals to help stay on track.  Your tasks should be related to the goals that you are trying to achieve.

2. Excellent for Task Management and Organization.  Once goals are set, begin building tasks that help you achieve your goals.  Actually writing out the tasks and assigning them (yes, even if it’s just you) puts accountability on the assignment.  Expand and elaborate on the tasks with sub tasks so that steps are not skipped or forgotten.

3. Allows you to prioritize and set deadlines. This is important when using project management software.  Prioritizing and setting deadlines helps you stay on track and helps you remember assignments & tasks.  Let’s face it…we’re busy.  There is much to do in just a day.  Knowing what’s on your schedule from day to day keeps you from being all over the place and feel chaotic.

4. It can track progress and send promptsMost project management software tracks your progress, prompting you when tasks are due or alerting you when things fall past due.  Again, this is helpful for planning and staying organized.  Sometimes falling behind can indicate that more help is needed or that you may have to find a different solution  or process.

There are several Project Management Software tools available.  It’s important to choose the one that fits your needs.  Regardless of what you choose, remember, in order for it to be effective, you have to do your part.
